Microsoft folds GitHub into CoreAI as CEO departs

GitHub Microsoft integration is reshaping the platform’s strategic direction. The platform will move under Microsoft’s CoreAI division. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced he will leave at the end of 2025. Microsoft will not directly replace him. Instead, GitHub’s leadership team will report to multiple CoreAI executives. This move follows Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub in 2018. While GitHub had retained some independence, this integration marks a closer union. Now, GitHub’s development and AI-assisted tool, GitHub Copilot, become central to Microsoft’s AI strategy.

This transition shows Microsoft’s commitment to AI-powered development tools. GitHub Copilot launched in late 2021. Since then, it has added support for multiple language models. It also introduced “agents” that execute coding tasks in the background. By placing GitHub within CoreAI, Microsoft unifies its AI development efforts.

However, challenges remain. Earlier in 2025, Copilot exposed private code repositories of major companies. Moreover, a recent Stack Overflow survey revealed declining trust in AI coding tools. Users cited extra debugging caused by “almost right” solutions.

Leadership changes and operational structure

Dohmke has been GitHub’s CEO since 2021 and was previously chief product officer. He will guide the transition through the end of 2025. His departure ends GitHub’s separate executive leadership. The leadership now reports to Julia Liuson, president of Microsoft’s developer division. Ultimately, they report to Jay Parikh, CoreAI group leader.

The CoreAI division launched in January 2025. It was announced by CEO Satya Nadella. Building out GitHub Copilot is one of its main tasks. Nadella stated that “internal organizational boundaries are meaningless” to customers and competitors. This statement underscores the logic of this integration.
