Gemini on Wear OS Expands AI Access Across Smartwatches
Google Deploys Gemini on Wear OS Devices
Gemini on Wear OS is now rolling out to select smartwatches, marking a major step in Google’s AI integration strategy. The rollout follows Google’s earlier announcement from May and aligns with its broader plan to phase out Google Assistant across platforms.
Gemini will be accessible on devices running Wear OS 4 or higher, including those from Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. Users can activate Gemini via voice (“Hey Google”), the side button, or directly through the app icon on the watch face.
This move brings the company’s generative AI closer to the user’s wrist, enabling smart interactions such as asking for cooking times or checking weather updates—hands-free and on the go.
New AI Capabilities for On-Watch Productivity
Beyond casual queries, Gemini on Wear OS introduces functional enhancements for daily productivity. Users can prompt Gemini to summarize recent emails or update calendars across connected apps. Tasks such as “Add my son’s next five baseball games to my calendar” or “Summarize my last email from Emily” demonstrate its expanded functionality.
Gemini also allows for contextual memory. For instance, users can instruct it to remember where they parked or schedule grocery reminders—features that streamline daily logistics directly from a wearable.
Circle to Search Adds AI Mode and Gaming Support
Alongside the smartwatch update, Google is expanding Circle to Search with new AI Mode capabilities. Users can now initiate searches by circling, scribbling, or tapping on visual content, and then engage AI Mode for deeper insights without leaving the current app.
AI Overviews are integrated into search results, offering structured and visual responses. Users can dive deeper by tapping “dive deeper with AI Mode” and engage in more complex follow-up queries.
Additionally, Circle to Search is gaining relevance in gaming. While playing, users can use the tool to identify characters or strategies without disrupting gameplay—adding new depth to real-time interaction.
Cross-Platform AI Integration and Regional Expansion
AI Mode’s availability is also expanding. Google has made it accessible via the Google app on both Android and iOS platforms. As of now, these features are available to users in the U.S. and India, further widening access to its AI-powered tools.
These updates underscore Google’s broader strategy: embedding Gemini AI into more devices and workflows, including mobile, desktop, and now, wearables. With improved AI Overviews that deliver cleaner formatting and more visuals, Gemini is shaping a consistent, intuitive user experience across platforms.
What do these AI integrations mean for how we engage with devices in motion—from gaming to daily errands?
