Jack Dorsey Unveils Bitchat: Bluetooth Messaging App with 300m Range
Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat with Offline Messaging Capability
Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Block and Twitter co-founder, has launched Bitchat, a Bluetooth messaging app built over a weekend. He shared the news on X, revealing that the app allows messaging without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Within hours, beta testing filled its 10,000-user capacity on Apple’s Testflight.
The app runs on a Bluetooth mesh network. This design helps it send messages even when users are offline. Under normal conditions, Bluetooth apps cover about 100 meters. However, Bitchat can extend this to 300 meters by routing messages through nearby users.
Designed for Connectivity Gaps and Decentralized Use
This functionality makes Bitchat valuable in settings where internet access is unreliable—like music festivals, rural areas, or crowded events. Its peer-to-peer network architecture aligns with Dorsey’s well-known commitment to decentralized technologies.
Bridgefy, another popular offline messaging app, gained global attention during the Hong Kong protests. Protesters used it to bypass internet blackouts and surveillance. Interestingly, Biz Stone—another Twitter co-founder—backs Bridgefy.
Both apps use end-to-end encryption to safeguard user privacy. Although their design and funding differ, their core goal remains the same: enabling secure, decentralized communication without relying on traditional infrastructure.
Early Demand Signals Market Appetite
The beta version of Bitchat filled quickly. Dorsey confirmed that it reached its 10,000-user limit and is awaiting Apple’s final review before a wider release. The fast response shows clear demand for tools that support secure, infrastructure-free messaging.
This is not Dorsey’s first effort in decentralization. While at Twitter, he helped create what later became Bluesky, though he is no longer involved with the platform. His deep belief in Bitcoin and open communication networks continues to influence his ventures.
Could Offline Messaging Reshape Digital Communication?
Apps like Bitchat highlight a growing shift: people want alternatives when traditional networks fail. With secure Bluetooth communication and peer relays, will tools like Bitchat become critical in emergencies, protests, or global events?
